Collas Crill Win BVI Corporate Cup; Murphy Breaks Ladies Record; Crossfitters Flex Muscle
A brilliant start to the new decade saw new teams Collas Crill and Caribbean Insurers line up against a rejuvenated BCQS, and experienced multiple winners Deloitte in this years Corporate Cup.
The open teams featured The Sorrentinos, Kat & Jo, Adam & Analouise, and Rossa & Amel. An impressive mens entry included new faces Joceron, Tom, Rossa Canavan, Greg and Adrian all fresh from the Crossfit den with Johanna Murphy, Tash Ruscheinski and Evie Hollis lining up in the ladies event.
The swim leg saw Deloitte take a commanding lead with BCQS close on their heals both teams leaving Collas Crill sporting brave swimwear, and Caribbean Insurers simply brave out on the course. A tremendous bike leg saw Collas Crill close the gap on BCQS whilst Caribbean Insurers and Deloitte both unfortunately suffered mechanical malfunctions.
Onto the run and evergreen Ben Butler fresh from a Crossfit makeover strode out purposefully for BCQS with a one minute lead over Collas Crill; could the veteran hang on? Not this time, as fleet footed Collas Crill floated by to win this years Corporate Cup and enjoy the prestige of champions for 2020, a title which Butler is determined to win back at the soonest opportunity.
In the ladies event Johanna, Tash and Evie all registered fast times over all three legs with Tash flying through the swim, Johanna whizzing the bike leg and Evie smashing the run. Johanna again taking the honours and setting another course record shaving 11 seconds off BVI legend Kay Reddy’s time of 2011.
In the mens race Shane Donovan dominated the swim, and jumped on his bicycle knowing there was a posse of strong cyclists on his tail; none stronger than Philippe Leroy who blitzed the field in his favourite discipline. He earned himself a handy 3 minute lead over an impressive Dan Mitchell going into the run, both on near course record pace. Philippe ran a solid leg to come home first in front of impressive newbie Clifton Struicken who clawed back an incredible 5 and half minutes. Dan took the fastest ever third place. Philippe missed the course record by six seconds.
In the Open team event The Sorrentinos were looking very dynamic in their psychedelic outfits and put up a very impressive performance coming in third behind the undefeated Johanna and Kat combo first, and Rossa & Amel second. Adam and Analouise were perhaps the fastest team, but Adam’s unfortunate detour on the bike left them too much to do this time.
